Lost Dreams
by Simon Wheatley
Set in E14, East London, Lost Dreams documents the early years of grime, capturing a time when youth clubs were the genre’s underground, pirate radio was a furtive experience and young people lived more freely in the world before smartphones.
Through photography, poetry and retrospective interviews, the book explores the harsh social realities that shaped a generation and the role of youth clubs as gathering places where grime became a way of life. Featuring a poem by singer-songwriter Hak Baker, Lost Dreams is both a portrait of a community and a protest against the austerity that led to the closure of the youth clubs fundamental to grime’s emergence.
