Always And Forever There
Always And Forever There
by Simon Wheatley
In the aftermath of the 2005 suburban riots that shook France, I travelled to Blois, a small town on the edge of one of the country’s largest banlieues. Just a kilometre uphill from the bourgeois town centre and its famous château lies France’s fourth-largest social housing project, home to almost half the town’s population. Here, life existed far removed from the postcard images of France, shaped by social inequality and the marginalisation of immigrant communities.
Photographed over the course of a year using 35mm and panoramic cameras, Always and Forever There / Toujours et Encore Là explores the lives of young people growing up within this environment. The work examines the institutional barriers and social divisions that shape their experiences, bringing together a striking collection of photographs that have been widely published but never fully realised in book form until now. Featuring bilingual text in English and French, the book offers an intimate portrait of a community too often overlooked.
